What You Missed at All Things D11
Very few of us have the expertise to score an invite to the All Things D conference in Rancho Palos Verdes, California. Lucky for you, you can live vicariously through PCMag's Michael Miller, who attended the conference this week. You can read his full posts on Forward Thinking or get the distilled version in this excellent summary.

Video: A Look Inside a Hackerspace
I read an article recently that said nothing gets invented in garages anymore. It is true that a lot of innovation is happening in software and that it is a lot easier to develop a new app than the next Google Glass. Or is it? New generations of hackerspaces are sprouting up all over the country that offer inventors, tweakers, and kids with too much time on their hands ways to futz around with 3D printers and soldering irons. And they are building some cool stuff. PCMag's Chris Snyder visited one such space in Brooklyn, New York. Check out his story and video.

Windows 8.1 Unveiled
I don't think it is entirely fair to call Windows 8 a failure as many of my peers are doing, but I think we can all agree it is far from a rousing success. Microsoft unveiled its plans to try to change that in a small but significant point release this week. One of the biggest changes: the start menu returns. But there is much more than that. Will it be enough to jump-start adoption? ExtremeTech's Sebastian Anthony has some strong opinions on that.

Get Your Windows Start Button Back Right Now
Don't feel like waiting for Windows 8.1 to get your beloved Windows Start button back? You can get it right now by downloading and installing PCMag's own Start Me Up utility. You can get it for $8, but for a $20 annual subscription you can download all 140-plus utilities we have built. It is one of the best deals going, if I do say so myself.
