Microsoft: The Xbox 720 won't require an always-on connection to play games
The internet has been abuzz for months with rumors about Microsoft's next Xbox requiring an always-on connection. Everyone started handwringing about the negative implications, and it even lead to a Microsoft employee losing his job after mouthing off on Twitter. Well, it seems as if all the worrying was for naught because a recently leaked internal memo makes it clear that a connection won't be required for all activities. It's a shame Microsoft let the rumors get so out-of-hand, though.

Intel's Silvermont revealed: After a five-year snooze, Intel is finally ready to crush ARM
Today, Intel has unveiled its next-generation Atom CPU core. Called Silvermont, this 22nm CPU will power the Merrifield (smartphone) and Bay Trail (tablet) SoCs. With the PC market waning, and investors flocking to competitors with proven mobile designs, Silvermont is a very, very big deal for Intel. Sebastian explores if a fast mobile x86 CPU is enough to save a floundering Windows tablet market, though, or if other endemic issues are at play.

Secrets of the PS4: Heavily modified Radeon, supercharged APU design
The PS4's interconnect structure is one of the most interesting questions and unknown pieces of the upcoming console. Joel dives into what's possible and combine it with what Sony's chief architect has revealed about the device.

Windows 8 passes 100 million license sales, almost matching the growth of Windows 7
In a twin-barreled announcement, Microsoft has confirmed the existence of Windows Blue (8.1), and that it has now sold 100 million Windows 8 licenses. This is up from 60 million licenses sold in January, and almost matching sales of Windows 7, which crossed the 100 million license mark on April 27 2010. Meanwhile, Microsoft will reportedly merge Windows 8 and Windows Phone into Windows Blue.

The world's first entirely 3D-printed gun has been made
We've been following the 3D printed gun for a while now. In internet time, it's been generations. In real time, it's been less than a year or so. What is legally defined as a gun has already been printed, but technically that's not the entire object, just some of the parts that make it work. Now, Defense Distributed, the company leading the way into the future of 3D-printed weaponry, has finally 3D-printed an entire gun -- in both the sense that it is legally considered a gun, and that every single piece is 3D-printed.

The future of cars is autopilot, not self-driving, according to Elon Musk
Much ado has been made recently about Google's focus on developing consumer-friendly self-driving cars in the next five years. Now, Elon Musk has confirmed that he is interested in the potential of bringing this same kind of technology to the electric cars made by Tesla Motors. The race is on to see who can bring self-driving cars to market first.

Valve's next trick: Dynamically changing gameplay, depending on your sweatiness
Plastic instruments have already come and gone. Motion control feels like it never quite fulfilled its potential. The Oculus Rift, though still in development, has serious flaws. The Wii U and its tablet controller haven't been able to get off the ground. The gaming industry is looking for a new method of immersion, and so far nothing has taken hold. Now, Valve is looking into tracking your sweat with the goal of enhancing your overall gaming experience. Though we can see where Valve's input ideas are headed, we still have no idea what a Steam Box is.
