Welcome to the newsletter! How are you all? I am well.
Let's get straight into some juicy computer tips. Hope you enjoy my interesting stories about computer tips. This email is all about computer maintenance. I can here you all saying "oh how boring". But is it boring when you save big $$$$ on computer repair? If you keep your computer maintained and running like a well oiled machine, I guarantee you will have hardly any computer problems.
Why do we have to maintain our computers? 1. When we install programs the files get scattered to any available space. 2. When we download files they often hang around for years in some mysterious folder that we never venture into. 3. Our computer keeps some temporary files for no particular reason at all. 4. Our computer records what we do on the computer and stores this history. 5. We install programs that we never use. 6. We create files such as documents and store them "just in case we need them later".

The grocery store is not only a place to get your supply of weekly vittles, it can be a virtual knowledge orb. The nice check out lady not only gave you the option of paper or plastic, she kindly reminded you to defragment your computer. It seemed like an odd time for that information but even more importantly; what is defragmenting? The hard drive of a computer is divided into a number of sections that store data for starting each of the computer programs. When installing new software, the computer looks for the first open slot to store each piece of data needed for that program. As other information is added and removed, these data slots are separated and spread apart. Look at it similar to your favorite rock and roll cover band. If the bass player is in Seattle and the keyboardist in Kansas, every gig is going to take a few days to put together. If all the guys live in the same town, you could have a jam session scheduled by lunchtime. Defragmenting puts all the data together in close proximity.
To access the defrag option: 1. Go to the Start menu at the bottom left corner 2. Choose Programs 3. Then choose the Accessories section 4. Then find System Tools and finally Disc Defragmenter. See more information about Disk Defrag.
The answer to the question of what is defragmenting can be answered by saying its getting the band back together.
It doesn't matter what type of computer you have, you still have to defrag it. I can hear you saying "But I paid an arm and a leg for that computer!" It still has to be looked after.
I have also made a new video about how to maintain your computer. It is a long and drawn out video so BE WARNED!! Computer maintenance tutorial.
People can neglect doing any computer maintenance at all because it just takes forever to really do it thoroughly.
I now use PowerSuite Golden to do all the work for me. It removes all the junk files, even the ones that are not in obvious folders. It also removes invalid registry entries and helps with pc maintenance. You can also set it on a schedule to run automatically.
It will even rescue your crashed computer. This is a secret of mine. My friends think I am a genius when I fix their computer (no charge of course) when it all looked liked bad news.
Erasing Files before Selling a Computer
Whether the intended goal is protecting bank account information, hiding pertinent fantasy baseball statistics, or clearing evidence of your former identity as a butler to the stars, it is important to clear your data before selling a computer. Hackers and other thieves with bad intent can find ways to access your information even if you've deleted files and cleared the recycle bin. Erasing files before selling a computer will ensure your privacy and stellar fantasy baseball record stays intact.
The first step to take in erasing files before selling a computer is to reformat the hard drive.
1. Remove your hard drive and place it in an external hard drive. 2. Connect it to another computer via USB. 3. By going into my computer, you can find the drive. 4. If you right click on the icon for the drive a pop up box will open. 4. You will see an option to format.
It is important to save all your documents or photographs to a disc as formatting will erase this data. There are small pieces of data stored in your computer registry and cleansing them is a good precaution to take before you get rid of the computer.
If you still have your operating system startup CD, installing a fresh version of Windows is a great step in erasing files before selling a computer. If your previous career adventures include time served as a CIA operative, it may be a good idea to simply reinstall a hard drive. New hard drives can cost in the area of $100 but if national security is at risk, it could be worth the price.
Check out this Western Digital WD Elements 1 TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive It is not just a hard drive...It is an external hard drive that costs well under $100. You have no excuse for not backing up your files before formatting! It is just so cheap now!
NOTE: Prices might have gone up lately due to hard drive shortages.
Of course I have an entire section on formatting your computer on Tips4pc. It is written with Windows Xp in mind; however the first steps still apply. See How to format.
